MB WAY is a leading digital wallet that powers over 45% of Portugal's e-commerce. Here's what MB WAY is, how it works, and how to accept it via Solidgate.
Portugal has one dominant way to pay online: MB WAY. Over 76% of Portuguese online shoppers choose MB WAY when it's available at checkout. The payment solution powers roughly 45% of the country's e-commerce transactions and is trusted by 7 million users.
If you want to succeed in Portugal, offering this payment method to your customers is a must.
That's why MB WAY is now part of Solidgate's – to help our merchants enter and grow in the Portuguese market. Here's what it is, how it works, and how to go live with it through Solidgate.
What is MB WAY?
MB WAY is a digital wallet developed by . It's a mobile app that connects to virtually every Portuguese bank, letting users link up to 10 cards and manage all their payments from one place.
MB WAY is very user-centric. Customers have full control inside the MB WAY app, where they can view active subscriptions and adjust spending limits. That transparency reduces involuntary churn and keeps support tickets low.
MB WAY works as a financial hub, where users can:
- Make online and in-store purchases
- Send peer-to-peer transfers
- Withdraw cash from ATMs
- Generate virtual cards
- Manage their subscriptions
- Make donations to more than 300 solidarity institutions
It supports one-time payments, authorized recurring payments, and one-click transactions. At scale, think of MB WAY as Portugal's equivalent of PIX in Brazil or iDEAL in the Netherlands: the local payment method you can't afford to skip.
It also runs MB WAY UP!, a built-in loyalty program that rewards users with cashback, vouchers, and exclusive offers for paying with MB WAY. That drives higher adoption at checkout and repeat usage over time, without any loyalty infrastructure on the merchants’ side.

How MB WAY app works at checkout
One-time payments
- Customer selects MB WAY at checkout and enters their mobile phone number.
- A push notification lands on their device.
- They open the MB WAY app, choose which linked card to pay with
- They review the order and transaction details, and confirm with biometrics or their six-digit MB WAY PIN.

The entire flow happens on the customer's phone – no redirect, SMS OTP codes, or typing payment details. The customer has four minutes to approve the transaction; otherwise, the order expires and the checkout restarts.
Recurring payments
MB WAY supports two recurring models.
- One-click payments (customer-initiated transaction) let returning customers pay using a stored token without full re-authentication – the customer confirms the initial mandate once, and future purchases require minimal interaction.
- Subscription payments (merchant-initiated transaction) let you charge on a schedule with no customer interaction at all. The customer approves the mandate during the first checkout, and subsequent billing happens automatically.
In both cases, the initial flow looks the same as a one-time payment. The difference is in what happens next – MB WAY stores a token that enables future charges, either customer-initiated or merchant-initiated, depending on the model.
Why MB WAY converts and protects your margins
✔️ High conversion. Mobile-native checkout that is familiar, secure, and trusted locally. Push notification → confirmation → done.
✔️ Low fraud, strong authentication. Every first MB WAY payment requires strong customer authentication – PIN or biometrics-based and device-bound. This makes it one of the safest payment methods in the European market.
✔️ No chargebacks, only refunds. MB WAY doesn't support traditional bank-initiated chargebacks. Disputes are resolved through refunds only. For subscription and digital goods merchants, this cuts dispute costs and eliminates representment work entirely.
✔️ Competitive pricing. MB WAY buy rates are typically lower than standard card interchange, which matters at volume.
✔️ Recurring-ready for subscriptions. Authorized payments handle automatic billing without re-authentication each cycle.
✔️ Loyalty drives repeat purchases. MB WAY UP! keeps customers coming back to the wallet as their preferred payment method.
✔️ Flexible operations. MB WAY supports both single-stage (instant) and two-stage (auth/capture) payment flows, along with partial captures, partial refunds, and authorization voids. You get the full operational toolkit.
