Terminal ID number

Terminal ID number (TID) is a unique eight-digit alphanumeric code that identifies a specific point-of-sale terminal or payment device. Payment processors assign TIDs to track which terminal processed each transaction, helping merchants, banks, and card networks maintain accurate transaction records.
Key points:
  • Unique to each individual terminal (not shared)
  • Distinct from merchant ID numbers (MID), which identify the merchant account
  • Appears on transaction receipts and processing records
  • Used for transaction tracking, dispute resolution, and fraud monitoring
Each TID links transactions to the specific terminal hardware, software configuration, and physical location. This helps merchants quickly locate transactions for refunds or disputes and allows payment processors to monitor transaction volumes and detect unusual activity patterns per terminal.
Every payment device requires a unique TID, from fixed checkout terminals to mobile readers, contactless devices, and pay-at-table systems.
