SmartPix at Solidgate: The dLocal solution making Pix recurring and QR-free

SmartPix via Solidgate

The Brazilian market is a powerhouse for e-commerce, with over 109 million e-shoppers. 29% of those e-commerce transactions are processed via PIX, the most popular instant payment method in the country, which is why it has been a part of our orchestration portfolio for a while.

However, while PIX is the undisputed leader in Brazil, subscription businesses have repeatedly struggled with friction during checkout. Recurring payments are hardly possible via standard Pix, as each transaction has to be approved individually by the customer.

This caused friction for business models that rely on repeat or automatic charges – especially when it comes to handling more dynamic scenarios where you have ad-hoc payments or need flexible recurring attempts.

That’s why we’re excited to share that dLocal has launched a powerful new payment method in Brazil: SmartPix, available via Solidgate. SmartPix reimagines the PIX experience by enabling automated and on-demand payments – no more manual approvals, QR codes, or repeated checkouts.

As a partner of dLocal, Solidgate is proud to be one of the first orchestrators to offer merchants access to SmartPix, further simplifying the expansion of digital-first businesses in Brazil.

What is SmartPix?

SmartPix is a new solution developed exclusively by dLocal, leveraging Open Finance rails to offer merchants a more streamlined and automated payment experience. Unlike traditional Pix, which requires customers to manually approve payments via QR codes or input their Pix key every time, SmartPix eliminates that hassle.

Once a customer consents to the payment method, their Pix credentials are securely stored. This means that businesses can automatically process payments without any further interaction from the customer, and handle variable payment amounts without restarting checkout flows.

Whether it’s a one-time payment or a recurring subscription, SmartPix allows frictionless, QR-free payments every time.

How does SmartPix work?

1. At checkout, customers select Pix via Open Finance.

2. They are redirected to a secure, dLocal-hosted page, where they select their bank.

3. They are then seamlessly guided to their banking app to approve the payment mandate – confirming the amount, frequency, and duration of future payments.

4. The customer authenticates the payment via their bank’s app.

5. Once approved, the payment is then automatically processed based on the pre-set schedule, with no further need for manual intervention.

How SmartPix improves conversions and reduces abandoned transactions in Brazil

  • No more QR codes or manual approvals: Once the user consents, payments are automatically triggered based on the agreed schedule without requiring reauthorization each time.
  • Supports a variety of payment scenarios: Enables one-time payments, scheduled payments, and recurring billing.
  • Unlimited retries based on your own logic: There are no payment restrictions, allowing you to retry failed transactions as many times as needed, based on your own rules, to ensure payment success.
  • Open Finance: Rooted in Brazil’s government-led Open Finance program, SmartPix is built and enabled through dLocal’s licenses.
  • Handle variable payment amounts: Unlike PIX Automatico, SmartPix is ideal for dynamic scenarios that require truly flexible recurring payments and billing options. You can charge customers based on usage, tiered pricing, or dynamic billing without needing to restart the checkout flow.
  • Direct access to a massive user base: PIX is already used by over 90% of Brazil’s adult population, and SmartPix allows you to tap into this widespread adoption with a smoother, frictionless payment experience.
