Scheme transaction ID
What is a scheme transaction ID?
Scheme transaction ID is a unique identifier that a – such as Visa or Mastercard – assigns to a transaction to track it and link it to related payments across the payment system. Also called a Network Transaction Identifier, it's generated by the card network rather than the merchant or gateway, and it travels in the records exchanged between the and the .
It isn't the same as a generic . A transaction ID is a general reference any system in the flow can assign for its own record-keeping; the scheme transaction ID is owned by the card network and identifies the transaction at the network level. Its defining job is linking payments together: when a merchant charges a stored card later, the scheme transaction ID from the original cardholder-approved payment is passed with each follow-up charge so the issuer recognizes them as part of the same agreement.
Key facts
- Also known as: Network Transaction Identifier
- Generated by: the card network (Visa, Mastercard, and others), not the acquirer, , or merchant
- Where it travels: in the authorization and clearing records exchanged between acquirer and issuer
- Primary use: linking a , such as a , back to the initial transaction
- Applies across: the authorization, clearing, and dispute stages of a card-network payment
How it works
- Initial authorization: the cardholder approves a payment, and the card network assigns a scheme transaction ID, returning it in the authorization response.
- Storage: the merchant or payment processor stores the ID alongside the saved card credential.
- Reuse for later charges: for each merchant-initiated transaction, the stored ID is sent so the issuer can link the new charge to the original consent.
- Reconciliation and disputes: acquirers, issuers, and merchants reference the ID to match records and tie a dispute to the exact transaction.
Scheme transaction ID vs other transaction identifiers
Each of these identifiers is created by a different party and answers a different question.
| Identifier | Generated by | Primary use |
| Scheme transaction ID | Card network | Links later charges to the original transaction |
| Any system in the flow (gateway or processor) | General record-keeping and lookups | |
| Acquirer | Tracing a transaction through settlement and disputes | |
| Acquirer or processor | Locating a specific transaction in network messages |
Why is the Scheme Transaction ID Important?
The Scheme Transaction ID is vital for merchants, , and financial institutions for:
- Tracking Transactions: Helps merchants, payment processors, and banks trace individual transactions within the payment network.
- Reconciliation: Ensures that all transactions are accurately reconciled between acquiring and issuing banks.
- Dispute Resolution: Allows banks and merchants to easily reference specific transactions when resolving disputes.
- Accurate Payment Processing: Ensures smooth communication between all involved entities, ensuring that payments are processed correctly within network rules.
